Reflections for the week: Stick With It

If you’ve ever tried meditation, and thought it was about clearing the mind, you’ll realise very quickly just how noisy your mind is. There may well have been times (especially early on) where you thought “Nope. It’s not for me”. Thankfully it’s not about clearing the mind at all.

In fact, one of the biggest myths about mindfulness is that it’s about clearing the mind.

Given that we have over 60,000 thoughts (ish) a day, and that even the happiest people in the world (including Buddhist Monks and Nuns) will admit they can’t clear their mind for long, you can understand why many busy people throw in the towel when it comes to “sitting and doing nothing”.

In fact, Mindfulness is not about clearing the mind. The teachings suggest that mindfulness has no goal, no purpose – it is an activity to simply observe what is.

Not why it is.

Or how it is.

Just noticing that it’s happening at all.

The benefits of doing this bring with it several rewards including better sleep and reduced stress.

So, when I teach my classes, the strongest message I deliver is to stick with it. If you’ve been trying to meditate and are finding it harder than expected, know that you’re not alone but that in time you’ll find that making full contact with this moment, will help, as Pema Chödrön says, train you in the art of “no big deal”. Life becomes more manageable, you pick your battles wisely and move to a place of responding helpfully.
